Over a decade ago, realizing the environmental challenges Russia faced, and the bridge-building capacity of email and the Internet, SEN was the first US organization to initiate a widespread campaign to connect environmental activists in Russia to the Internet. Later, having supplied over 500 environmentalists with online capabilities, we broadened our support for the movement and initiated the capacity-building the Northern Eurasia Environmental Assistance Program, completed in 2001. The success of these programs, complemented by different forms of support from several other NGOs in northern Eurasia and the West, has yielded a skilled and well-connected environmental community in Russia and other northern Eurasian countries--a community now struggling to resist the anti-environment practices of President Putin and similar state leaders. In response, SEN has developed an exciting new program: the Russian Environmental Partnership Program (REPP).
